St Dunstan’s College held its inaugural Easter Rugby Festival in 2014, which involved 10 schools; St Dunstan’s College, Benoni High, HeronBridge College, Ashton International School, Ballito (KZN), Stanford Lake College (Limpopo), Falcon College (Zimbabwe), Brandwag HS, Hans Moore HS and Birchleigh HS. Five thousand spectators passed through the St Dunstan’s College gates during the weekend, and spectators were privileged to witness rugby of an exceptionally high standard.

The aim of the festival was to showcase local potential future rugby stars and to allow players to compete and interact at an organized event on the East Rand. The participants represented their schools with pride and passion and lasting friendships were forged amongst the players, officials and spectators. Opportunities to participate were also created for pupils from previously disadvantaged communities. Eighteen U18 Rugby players from the participating schools went on to showcase their talent at the Coca Cola Craven Week in Middelburg, Mpumalanga last year. The success of the 2014 Easter Rugby Festival led to the envisaged expansion of the Easter Sports Festival to include Netball and Hockey. 700 athletes will be involved in 2015 and the number of Zimbabwe schools participating will increase from one in 2014 to four schools this year. Falcon College, Peterhouse, St John’s College and Hellenic Academy, together with all our local schools will no doubt help increase the profile of this growing event.
